Write those letters!
March 31, 2008 at 10:24 pm | In Uncategorized | Leave a CommentTags: fundraising, HERO, letter writing, WOW
As of right now, 3,200 fund-raising letters have been written by committee members, which is great!! But we’re HERO, we can do better! This is how we raise most of our money!

Our goal is to send 4,000 letters this semester! Estimating from previous years, if we send out 4,000 letters, we can expect to raise … $120,000!!!
So…send those extra 5, 10, or 15 letters! Every letter makes a difference! Ask your parents for their friends’ and co-workers’ addresses. Write your friends’ parents from high school. Get creative!
Tips for writing letters:
Include a picture of you and one of the HERO children if possible Personalize each letter Utilize a church/neighborhood directory etc. if possible Write to your former and current bosses, families you babysit for, etc. Include the quote: “Never think you need to apologize for asking someone to give to a worthy cause, any more than as though you were giving them an opportunity to participate in a high grade investment. The duty of giving is as much theirs as the duty of asking is yours.”-John Rockefeller Think about this: What is unique about your situation that can help you write letters?
Shout-out to the WOW Committee! Every member has written at least 25 letters!

Faculty Advisor Addresses Committee Members
March 27, 2008 at 2:06 pm | In Uncategorized | Leave a CommentTags: inspiration, leadership. excellence, success
Dr. Melanie Lankau addressed committee members at the monthly HERO meeting. She said that she was blown away with what UGA HEROs has accomplished in the past few years. She spoke about the concept of achieving excellence and shared an acronym she created in order to guide others towards this goal. The acronym spells out CIRCLE.
-
C is for Consideration- Consideration of others around you.
-
I is for Integrity- She instructed us that we should determine our tip 5 values. Then, we should consider how consistent we are in living up to our values on a day-to day basis. She also mentioned the fact that we should follow through with the promises we make to others and make sure that we meet or expectations.
-
R is for Respect- We should respect difference and conflict. Without these two concepts, greatness cannot be achieved. She also stressed the importance of listening to others without judgement.
-
C is for Courage- Leaders must have a thick skin. They should be able to say “no” when their plate is full. This also includes the ability to admit when you make mistakes and own them.
-
L is for Learning- We should always be continuously learning in order to adapt to the world around us. Learning does not end when we graduate. In order to be successful, we have to keep up with what is going on.
-
E is for Example-We should lead by example. She also stresses that we should never underestimate how contagious enthusiasm is. Attitude and showing up is 90% of success.

Team Leader Applications Due
March 27, 2008 at 12:44 am | In Uncategorized | Leave a CommentTags: get involved, leadership, opportunity, team leaders
UGA HEROs is looking for Team Leaders for Fall 2008!
WHAT IS A TEAM LEADER?
HERO Team Leaders act as the liaisons between the HERO organization and the HERO philanthropists who sign up to raise money for our organization in the fall. T.L.s play a critical role as the leaders, communicators, and motivators for 1,000+ philanthropists, broken down into teams of about 20 philanthropists each. They serve as the face of UGA HEROs to the philanthropists!
HIGHLIGHTS:
-
We’re looking for Greek Team Leaders, Residence Hall Team Leaders, and Upperclassmen Team Leaders.
- We’ll give you all the resources you need to lead your team!
- It’s a short time commitment (Fall 2008 plus a few training dates this April) compared to most campus leadership opportunities which are usually year-long.
- T.L.s have a huge impact – this position is absolutely essential to HEROs’ success!
- It’s an opportunity way to gain real leadership experience.
- It’s a great stepping-stone to get more involved with HERO (six of the new-comers to this year’s HERO executive council were Team Leaders last year).
- The application is short and easy (will literally take less than 10 minutes to fill out) and can be found at www.ugaheros.org.
Applications are due March 27 at 5 pm to 408 Brooks Hall
